On Thursday, a single accident on the University of Ilorin campus resulted in one fatality and nine injuries of varying severity.
A ten-seater commercial bus carrying people from the campus to the town after work was involved in the accident.
A statement signed by the Director, Corporate Affairs of the University, Kunle Akogun, said that “the lone accident involved a commercial bus conveying ten passengers going out of the campus.
He, however, did not identify whether the victim of the accident was a student or worker at the institution.
“As soon as it occurred, the University Management immediately commenced rescue operations, and all the victims were moved to the University Health Centre. They were attended to by a team of medical personnel at the University Health Centre,” the statement said.
He said that while one person lost his life in the accident, five sustained serious injuries.
Akogun said, “One of them needed advanced treatment and was referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital after he was stabilised.
“Four individuals received minor medical attention and were subsequently released from the University Health Centre. The remaining five victims—two men, two women, and the driver—are presently receiving treatment there.
“Sadly, one of the victims was brought in dead. The corpse has been taken to the morgue, and the university administration is attempting to get in touch with the victim’s next of kin.
“The Management expresses regret for this unfortunate incident, extends its condolences to the deceased’s family, and asks God to give the family peace of mind while we pray for the injured victims to recover quickly.”
